For Gmail to Gmail the best method is POP, not IMAP. IMAP is best for other services like outlook (as mentioned) or for syncing to multiple devices (such as your cell phone).
If you have a Google Apps Account, STOP, read the lower instructions.
5. Enter your original gmail username without @gmail.com.

Below are instructions for a POP connection
In the original Gmail account.
1. Go to Mail Settings
2. Click the "Forwarding and POP/IMAP" Tab
3. In the POP Download section, click "Enable POP for ALL MAIL".
4. Save Changes
In the new Gmail account.
1. Go to Mail Settings
2. Click the "Accounts and Import" Tab
3. In the "Check mail using POP3" section, click "Add POP3 email account" button.
4. In the popup window, enter the original email address.
5. Enter your original gmail username without @gmail.com.
6. Enter your original gmail password.
7. For POP Server leave it as pop.gmail.com or pop.googlemail.com
8. For Port, 1109. Read through the checkbox options if you want to use them for your settings.
10. Click "Add Account"
This will prompt you further, it should ask if you want to send mail as the original account address, you may choose that based upon your preference.
6. Enter your original google apps password
7. For POP Server change it to pop.gmail.com or pop.googlemail.com (if those don't work try the default option it gave)8. For Port, change it to 995
9. Read through the checkbox options if you want to use them for your settings.
10. Click "Add Account"
This will prompt you further, it should ask if you want to send mail as the original account address, you may choose that based upon your preference.

Thanks! Will this actually transfer over all my OLD sent email and chat history to the new address though? Or will this method just apply to future sent/received email?
